The Golden Mile is an area in Leicester (on part of Belgrave Road) which is known for its large number of Indian shops (including many clothing and jewelry shops), and for its many restaurants serving Indian cuisine.
Many people believe (wrongly) that the name, "The Golden Mile", is somehow related to the high number of shops in the area selling jewelry. In fact, the name first came into use in the late 1960s and early 1970s when a large number of yellow-amber traffic lights were installed along a short stretch of road (a stretch which happened to be exactly one mile in length).
The Golden Mile is especially famous for its seasonal lights which are lit during the Winter festivals of Christmas, and Diwali (the Hindu New Year). The Diwali celebrations in Leicester tend to be focused on The Golden Mile area, and are in fact the largest outside of India.
