Glasgow


Glasgow is the most populous city in Scotland, and the third most populous city in the the UK. As of 2004, the city's population was estimated at 1,171,390. The term "Glaswegian" is used to refer to both the inhabitants of the city and the local dialect.

  1. Glasgow is the largest and most populous city in Scotland, and the 4th most populous in the United Kingdom overall after London, Birmingham, and Leeds.

  2. Glasgow grew to its large size in the 19th century with the industrial revolution. It became a leading center of engineering (especially shipbuilding and marine engineering), textiles, and chemicals.

  3. During the late 19th century, and early 20th century, Glasgow was often known as the "second city of the British Empire".

  4. Today, Glasgow is a leading financial center, and home to many leading Scottish businesses.

  5. Glasgow has extensive road, rail, and air transport links:

    • The M8 motorway passes through Glasgow city center, and connects to the M73, M77, and M80.

    • The M74 runs South towards Carlisle.

    • The A82 connects Glasgow to Argyll and the western highlands of Scotland.

    • Glasgow has two main line railway stations: Queen Street Station (which connects Glasgow to Edinburgh and the North of Scotland), and Glasgow Central Station (which is on the West Coast Main Line, and connects Glasgow to the England and the South).

    • Glasgow also has a suburban rail system, and an underground rail system, for travel within the city.

    • Glasgow is served by two international airports: Glasgow International Airport (which is to the West of the city), and Glasgow Prestwick Airport (which is to the Southwest).

  6. Soccer is an important part of the history and culture of Glasgow:

    • Glasgow was home to the first international match, held in 1872, between England and Scotland (the result was 0-0).

    • Glasgow is also home to Hampden Park, Scotland's national soccer stadium, which holds the European record for attendance at a football match (149.547).

    • There are three professional soccer clubs in Glasgow: Celtic, Rangers, and Partick Thistle.

  7. Glasgow's principal library, the Mitchell Library, is one of the largest public reference libraries in Europe.
