Derby Arboreturm

Derby Arboretum is an aboretum and public park in Derby, England. It occupies an area of 18.5 acres (7.5 hectares), and is known to local people as "the arboretum" or "the arbo".

Derby Arboretum is in fact the oldest public park in England, having first opened in 1840. It was financed by Joseph Strutt, a former mayor of Derby and a member of a prominent family of local industrialists, as a gift to the working people of the town who had helped his family in amassing a fortune.

Derby Arboretum was visited by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1859. It is believed to have provided part of the inspiration for his design of Central Park in New York City.

Unfortunately, Derby Arboretum did go through a period of decline in recent decades due to a combination of vandalism and lack of fortune. That trend has however now been reversed, thanks to a combination of National Lottery funding and the efforts of the local community. Historic facilities and ornaments have been restored, and new ones added too.
