Blackpool is a town on the coast of Lancashire, England in the UK. The town has been a popular center of tourism since the 19th century. As of 2005, Blackpool had an estimated population of 142,900.

  6. In recent years, changes in popular tastes, and the availability of affordable overseas travel has somewhat reduced Blackpool's popularity as a leisure destination. That said, Blackpool's leisure facilities and sandy beaches continue to attract millions of visitors every year.

  7. Blackpool is also a leading entertainment venue, and specializes in variety shows featuring popular entertainers and comedians.

  8. Blackpool is host to the longest running seaside show in Britain called "Legends". "Legends" features tribute artistes with a live band, and has been performed since 1999.

  9. Blackpool is home to one of the oldest electric tramways in the world, the Blackpool tramway. The tramway dates back to 1885, and runs for a length of 11 miles (18 kilometers). Each year, the tramway carries approximately 6.5 million passengers.

  10. Blackpool is sometimes known as the "gay capital of the North".

    • Historically, many seaside resorts, including Blackpool, have been relatively welcoming of minority groups such as the LGBT community.

    • Since the 1990s, the town has promoted itself as a gay destination.

    • Blackpool had its first Gay Pride parade in 2006.

    • There are severaly bars, pubs, and nightclubs aimed at the LGBT community.

    • There is a local online radio station, Blackpool Gay Radio, which caters to the LGBT community.
