Iron BridgeThe Iron Bridge was the first cast-iron arch-bridge in the world. The bridge, which crosses the River Severn, is 100 feet (30 meters) in the length. The bridge was built between 1775 and 1779, and opened in 1781. The bridge was constructed using iron smelted using a (the new) technique developed by Abraham Darby, which allowed relatively cheap production of iron. Since Darby's process for smelting iron was an important early industrial process, the area around the Iron Bridge is today promoted as the "Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution". Of course, in reality, the Industrial Revolution took place in many different locations - so the description is not strictly historically correct - nevertheless, the Iron Bridge is an important and potent symbol of the early stages of the Industrial Revolution. The Iron Bridge crosses the River Severn in Ironbridge (the village takes its name from the bridge) which is today part of Telford. Since the construction of the bridge, the area in which the bridge has located has become widely known as "Ironbridge Gorge".
